Upon sitting down at our window bench seat at Eathouse Diner, Stef instantly spied the drinks menu and smiled. Anywhere that has a long neck of Coopers on the menu is a place that means a good night is ahead. In the very retro fitout of the diner, in Sydney's inner city of Redfern, relaxed and shared is the general feeling you get as soon as you enter.
On a rainy Saturday night, Stef did very well to control my urge to order multiple entrees, we were here with one thing on the brain, dessert.
When i read about Eathouse Diner in reviews soon after opening, the highlight had been the return of the Banana Split. Whilst i had previously had been excited to revisit the kitschy dessert, it was the actually the fact bananas were a rare treat now they sit at over $12.99 a kilo in the shops, why i was most excited to see excited to include this dish on the list.
Back to entrees and after the gentle reminder we settled on a light entree from the very vegetarian friendly menu. The kingfish ceviche was so fresh and was washed down between gulps of beer and cider. We almost licked off the plate, both agreeing we are suited to this kind of eating.
One long neck down and our mains, Eathouse's take on the classic fish and chips and their house salad arrived. (We figured a salad would definitely mean more dessert space.)
The pan-friend barramundi with kipflers and a zucchini and herb salad were insanely good. The fish was so tender and the kipflers crunchy. The house salad seemed basic, a gorgonzola, beetroot and apple salad, served on a bed of the very kitschy iceberg lettuce, packed the perfect punch.
If it was considered acceptable to use your spoons to create a drumroll, i am pretty sure we would have as our dessert was finally placed in front of us. The presentation alone was everything we had hoped for. Glass boat, check. Ripe banana, check. Ice cream (which turned out to also be banana), check. Chocolate AND caramel sauce, check. Nuts, check. Best of all, cocktail umbrella, check. It was definitely the highlight of the night and if the drumroll had of been acceptable, i would have also licked the boat!
I know there is still another 40 places to try on the list, but i am pretty sure i will be craving another visit to this classic.
